Unfortunately, we have started the year 2024 with the invaluable loss of our patron Xavier Sierra i Valentí, Doctor of Medicine, dermatologist and graduate in Humanities.
Dr. Sierra, in addition to being a patron of the Jané Mateu Foundation, also held other positions, among which:
Founding member of the European Society for the History of Dermatology.
Member of the Catalan Society of History of Medicine.
Academic of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia.
Editor-in-chief of the Gimbernat Magazine of the history of medicine.
President of the Board of the Museum of History of Medicine of Catalonia.
Dr. Sierra was born in Girona in 1952, graduated in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and specialized in Dermatology at the Madrid Clinical Hospital. He also had a doctorate in Medicine from the Complutense University of Madrid and had developed his professional life as a dermatologist in Terrassa and Barcelona.
He focused his work on the History of Dermatology and had published more than a dozen books on this topic, as well as chapters, translations and prologues, in addition to being the author of numerous articles in specialty magazines and in the general press. In the last fifteen years of his life, he developed intense activity in the field of medical humanities and during the months of confinement due to Covid, he wrote a poem every day and made a collection of poems that he titled “Poesies confinades”.
Both in his professional and human aspects, Dr. Xavier Sierra has been a person worthy of praise and admiration and will remain in the memory of all of us who have had the privilege of knowing him and in the memory of our Foundation.
